The most common A1-A2 uses

Learn the verb or preposition together with a complete dative phrase. This makes it easier to recognize who receives, benefits, or experiences something.

Recipient

dać · kupić · pokazać · wysłać

The dative identifies the person receiving something. The thing received is normally accusative: Daję mamie książkę.

Daję mamie kwiaty.Kupuję bratu prezent.Pokazuję turystce drogę.Wysyłam nauczycielowi e-mail.

Help and communication

pomagać · dziękować · odpowiadać · ufać

Several common verbs directly require the dative. Learn each verb together with the questions komu? czemu?.

Pomagam siostrze.Dziękuję nauczycielce.Odpowiadam studentowi.Ufam przyjacielowi.

Feelings and impressions

podobać się · smakować · jest mi...

The person experiencing a feeling or impression is dative: mi, ci, jej, nam. The thing causing it remains the subject.

Podoba mi się ta sukienka.Smakują nam pierogi.Jest jej zimno.Miło mi.

Prepositions

dzięki · przeciwko · wbrew · ku

These prepositions require the dative. Ku is correct but less common and more formal or literary than the others.

Dzięki mamie mówię po polsku.Jestem przeciwko temu planowi. On działa wbrew zasadom.Idziemy ku miastu.

Podobać się, smakować, and feelings

In Polish, the thing that makes an impression is the grammatical subject, while the person experiencing it is dative. The verb therefore agrees with the thing, not with the person.

One thing

Podoba mi się ta sukienka.

ta sukienka → podoba się

More than one thing

Podobają mi się te buty.

te buty → podobają się

ExamplePerson: dativeSubjectVerb
Podoba mi się ta sukienka.I like this dress.mita sukienkapodoba się
Podobają mu się te buty.He likes these shoes.mute butypodobają się
Ta książka podoba się Ani.Ania likes this book.Anita książkapodoba się
