Case 2 of 7

Dopełniacz— Genitive

Absence, origin, and quantity

Learn to express absence, origin, destination, possession, and quantity, as well as the forms required by common A1-A2 verbs and prepositions.

Case questions

kogo?of whom? / whom? (person or animal)

czego?of what? / what? (thing or idea)

A magical introduction

The genitive in three simple situations

Start with three common uses: saying what you do not have, where you come from, and how much of something there is. In each example, ask kogo? czego? and notice how the noun changes.

Absence

Nie mam psa ani kota.

I have neither a dog nor a cat.

pies → psa · kot → kota

Origin

Jestem z Brazylii.

I am from Brazil.

Brazylia → Brazylii

Quantity

Mam dużo czasu.

I have a lot of time.

czas → czasu

What the genitive does

The genitive connects a noun to ideas such as absence, origin, destination, possession, and quantity. It also appears after specific verbs and prepositions. Instead of translating it with one fixed word, identify what requires the form in each sentence.

ExampleDopełniaczGenitive · case 2Meaning
Nie mam brata.kogo? — brataI do not have a brother: a person is absent.
Potrzebuję wody.czego? — wodyI need water: potrzebować requires the genitive.
Wracam do domu.do czego? — domuI am going back home: do requires the genitive.

Ask kogo? about a person or animal and czego? about a thing, substance, or idea. These questions help identify the form, but the verb, preposition, negation, or quantity tells you why the genitive is used.

Mam versus nie mam

This is the most important A1 contrast. In an affirmative sentence, mam normally takes the accusative. When the same object is negated with nie mam, Polish uses the genitive.

What you need to know in this section

BiernikAccusative · case 4
DopełniaczGenitive · case 2

For now, learn only this comparison: mam uses the accusative, while nie mam uses the genitive. The complete accusative rules belong to the separate Biernik chapter, case 4.

Affirmation

mam + biernik

accusative · case 4

Mam mamę. Mam siostrę. Mam rodzeństwo.

Negation

nie mam + dopełniacz

genitive · case 2

Nie mam mamy. Nie mam siostry. Nie mam rodzeństwa.

Dictionary formmam + biernikaccusative · case 4nie mam + dopełniaczgenitive · case 2Meaning
mamaMam mamę.Nie mam mamy.I have a mother. / I do not have a mother.
siostraMam siostrę.Nie mam siostry.I have a sister. / I do not have a sister.
bratMam brata.Nie mam brata.I have a brother. / I do not have a brother.
piesMam psa.Nie mam psa.I have a dog. / I do not have a dog.
kotMam kota.Nie mam kota.I have a cat. / I do not have a cat.
rodzeństwoMam rodzeństwo.Nie mam rodzeństwa.I have siblings. / I do not have siblings.

Do not learn mam mamę as a genitive pattern. Mam mamę is accusative; only the negative version nie mam mamy is genitive. With masculine people and animals, the two forms may look identical: mam brata and nie mam brata.

Lubię versus nie lubię

Lubić follows the same affirmative-versus-negative contrast. The object of lubię normally takes the accusative. When the verb is negated with nie lubię, that same object changes to the genitive.

Affirmation

lubię + biernik

accusative · case 4

Lubię kawę. Lubię ten film. Lubię nowe książki.

Negation

nie lubię + dopełniacz

genitive · case 2

Nie lubię kawy. Nie lubię tego filmu. Nie lubię nowych książek.

Dictionary formlubię + biernikaccusative · case 4nie lubię + dopełniaczgenitive · case 2Meaning
kawaLubię kawę.Nie lubię kawy.I like coffee. / I do not like coffee.
herbataLubię herbatę.Nie lubię herbaty.I like tea. / I do not like tea.
polska kuchniaLubię polską kuchnię.Nie lubię polskiej kuchni.I like Polish cuisine. / I do not like Polish cuisine.
ten filmLubię ten film.Nie lubię tego filmu.I like this film. / I do not like this film.
zimne mlekoLubię zimne mleko.Nie lubię zimnego mleka.I like cold milk. / I do not like cold milk.
nowe książkiLubię nowe książki.Nie lubię nowych książek.I like new books. / I do not like new books.

This is a general negation pattern for a direct object: the affirmative sentence uses the accusative, while the negative sentence usually uses the genitive. With masculine people and animals, both forms can look identical: Lubię psa and Nie lubię psa.

The same pattern with other verbs

Do not limit this rule to lubić. A direct object that is accusative in an affirmative sentence normally changes to the genitive when the verb is negated.

AffirmationNegationMeaning
Czytam książkę.Nie czytam książki.I am reading a book. / I am not reading a book.
Kupuję kawę.Nie kupuję kawy.I am buying coffee. / I am not buying coffee.
Oglądam film.Nie oglądam filmu.I am watching a film. / I am not watching a film.
